As I see it Carmen Herrara is possibly the most abstract of the abstract painters. Her 2016 mini-retrospective at the new Whitney in NYC shows an analytic mind creating form in space. The hollow modernism of the Whitney architecture is a perfect foil for her large minimalist thought-designs morphing into exquisitely conceived paintings.
In a photoreproduction Herrara paintings may look as detached as a Chevron logo.
